IAO, the name used by the ancient Gnostics to represent the Godhead, is in itself a true Magickal Formula. Representing a process which can be applied to every human act and to every human approach to every experience, I represent Isis, the Hermit of the Tarot; the Astrological Sign of Virgo, the naive happiness we feel in enjoying things just discovered; A is Apophis, the Destroyer, the one who brings ruin in a situation of naive happiness; lastly, O is Osiris, Isis's husband which, killed by Set, rises again to a new, more complete and satisfying awareness. We go back to the happiness which was there at the beginning, but without the naivete which allowed that happiness to be polluted and destroyed. If applied to every human experience, the Formula of IAO allows us to understand the course of things, putting events in the right dimension and perspective.
The story of Thelema also follows this rule: born in 1985, after a great beginning which saw them unwillingly raised to the positions of leaders of what time seemed to be an 'occult movement' in the world of indipendent productions and underground scene, the apex of which being the release 'Tantra', they had a gap of rejection towards the music, and devoted themselves to personal interests which seemed more satisfying: the years of boredom, of Apophis.
In 1994 Thelema came back. Osiris. The Phoenix rises from its own ashes, and the Hawk flaps his wings in the face of those who didn't believe. If, releasing 'The Vision and the Voice', Thelema summed up the years of silence, with 'Night Of Pan' they strongly cut the bridges with their past, throwing themselves towards dimensions and lands before untouched. In the initiatic system of the Great White Brotherhood, the Night of Pan is a level of Initiation beyond the Abyss of the demon called Choronzon; a state of being (or not-being) where there is a complete annihilation of the material and individual personality. Beyond the Abyss, in the City of Pyramids, the Masters of the Temple sit on the darkness of the Night of Pan, after passing through the purifyng Fire.
'Night of Pan' is, once and for all, a pale replection of all of this. The recording of the album itself has been for Thelema an initiatic and catarctic experience, an alchemical sublimation of sounds, lyrics and feelings. Paolo Favati's artistic productions has distilled from Giorgio Parmigiani's and Massimo Mantovani's compositions anything esoteric and obsessive that could be found in the violent electric assault whic makes up today's Thelema's artistic expressions. If 'In a Hole', 'Hills of Dreams' or 'Here We stand' reminds us of the sound of the 'Glory of the Hawk', tracks like 'Night of Pan', 'Hidden on Holy Hills', 'Six Six Six' or 'Unknown' represent best the Thelema of today. Towards the Night of Pan, in company with Lenny Bruce. I wait for you in the City of the Pyramids.
